New health guidelines encourage use of alternative medicine

Scale

Health care providers can use the latest scientific evidence and alternative medicine to help them better understand and treat their patients, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Medical Association said Monday.

The AAP and the AMA, the nation’s two largest medical organizations, issued guidelines to physicians and other health care providers on how to use science and medical technology to inform and treat patients.

“In the current climate of uncertainty about the efficacy of existing medications, alternative medicine is an important tool to help our patients get better, more often, and at a lower cost,” said Dr. William Hahn, the AAP’s chief medical officer.

The guidelines come after the American Heart Association and the Society of Alternative and Complementary Medicine released a joint statement urging physicians and health care professionals to encourage their patients to try alternative therapies, including natural health care. “

We also believe that these new guidelines are a good first step toward expanding the use of this emerging field in health care, which is critical to a healthy society.”

The guidelines are based on research that shows people who take an alternative medicine are more likely to be better off in the long run than those who don’t, the two organizations said.

“We are proud to have been part of this effort, and we encourage all people to follow the advice of the experts in the field to make the most informed decisions possible,” said the AMA’s Dr. Daniel Grossman.

“While there are many important benefits from using alternative medicine, it is important to remember that all health care is about the patient and not just the health care provider.”
